John Steinbeck Summary

John Steinbeck is a very interesting writer.Steinbeck was born in 1902. He grew up in Salinas, California. He had two sisters, two of them being older, and the one younger. His mother, Olive Steinbeck had her hand full with four children. She was indeed the one who passed her love for arts on to her only son, John. As a kid, Steinbeck’s favorite book was Le morte d author by sir Thomas Malory. When he was a kid, he worked for a ranch range bailing hay and what not. He graduated from Salinas High School, in 1919. He attended Stanford University for a brief couple years but surprisingly, did not graduate.

John Steinbeck knew pretty well that he wanted to be a writer, so 1925, Steinbeck left Salinas for New York to pursue his own writing career. Unfortunately, he came back home to California, without success. He was not about to give up his dream yet though. He kept pushing, and in 1935 it finally happened, he published his very first novel, Cup of Gold. His novel won a California Commonwealth Clubs gold metal, the award for best novel.

During the World War Two era, Steinbeck worked as a newspaper correspondent for the New York newspaper, writing about interesting or breaking news about the war. Many of his novels were about mainly the depression, when people were struggling for survival, respect, and dignity. He also wrote a bit about social protest and other things.

John Steinbeck was loved for his books so much. A amazingly 17 of his books were turned into movies, some of them several times. That is so amazing for a writer to have 17 books turned into movies, most writers do not even have 17 books unless if they are greatly accomplished. Some of his prizes for his novels include the Puzzlers Prize, Nobel Prize, and the United States Medal of Freedom, just to name a couple. John Steinbeck, even though famous, suprisingly hated the public eye. He stayed out of it as much as posible. He was married a whopping 3 people, and had to sons. Steinbeck is arguably the greatest writer in U.S history, or all history for that matter.

Essential Question #1

John Steinbeck lived during the great depression. He was about forty years old. Most of his books were written during that time period. His first book that got published by him was in 1929, during the stock market crash, which started the great depression. The book was called Cup of Gold. Other books he published during the great depression were The Pastures of Heaven (1932), The long valley (1938), Tortilla Flat (1935), Of Mice and Men (1937) and many others.

Most of his books were centered about the great depression, or people struggling to survive. He also wrote about wars. A book about this topic include the novel Grapes of Wrath (1939). This was remarkable because it inspired many people. Countless people loved his books so much that he won numerous awards including one of the gradest of them all Nobel Prize. If there was a struggling family, trying to survive in unemployment, it would proably make the family feel better knowing that people do notice you and write books about it.

Essential Question #2

If you know a lot about the great depression, you know about John Steinbeck.  He was the greatest and most popular topic in a world of unemployment. He also published many books during the great depression and was inspired to write about it in so many of his books and they are still popular today after at least 65 years, some even closer to 80 years ago. This made people of many generations kind of not truly know, but understand or acknowledge what most people went through during that horrid time, because if you were not involved in it you probably do not really comprehend to the full devastation it did to numerous families.

He published books after the great depression but in his main career his books got published mostly during the great depression. This was unbelievably rare because he had to be a outstanding writer to land all of those publications during that time period, which many people agree that he was. Nothing could stop John Steinbeck from pursuing his writing career, not even the great depression itself.
