early life

Dorthea lange was born as a second generation Germain immigrant on may 26 1895 in new Jersey. Dorthea was original named dorthea margaretta netzhorn when she was born. then when she was older she dropped her middle name and picked up her mothers Madden name of Dorthea lange. right after her fathere abandond her famly when she was only 12 years of age. It was one of the two most tromatic incience in her life. the second incident was her condition of polio witch left her with a purminat limp with her right leg.

 

 

 

career

Dorothea was educated in potogriphy at new york city by Clarence h white. she was informally apprenticed to sevral photography studios in new York city. including that of the the famed arnold genthe in 1918 Dorothea moved to San Francisco. by the fowling year she sucefuly opened her own portrait studio. for the rest of her life across the bay in Berkeley.in 1920 she married the painter maynard dixon. with him she had two sons. one born in 1925 was names daniel rhoades dixon the second kid was born in 1929 who was named john eglesfeather dixon.

 

with the onset of the great depression, Dorothea turned her camera from her studio to the streets. her studies of the homeless and poor attracted the attention of other photographers from the local area of san Francisco. that lead to her enployment to the resettlement administration later called the farm security administration.

 

in December of 1935 she sadly divorced her first husband dioxin and married economist paul schuster taiyler who was the professor of economy at burkly university of California. he taught her in social and political maters then together they documented the poverty in the rural areas.
