Beginning

what? and when?

Elections

President Hoover used a special strategy to gain support from the south. He appealed the the white voters, giving him amazing support from the south. This was the first time a republican president had support from Texas.

When Calvin Coolidge didn't run for a second term, Hoover was the leading Republican candidate. Hoover received substantialmedia coverage and support.  His popularity in reputation, and experience combined all to get him the nomination on the first ballot. His running mate was Charles Curtis.

His opposing candidate was Alfred E. Smith. Smith targeted anti-Catholicism to gain support from the protestant communities. This was an advantage for Hoover. Both candidates encouraged to make better conditions for farmers, improve on immigration laws, and maintain Americas foreign policy.

What few voters knew, however, was that in private Hoover secretly did not support the Volstead Act, and was known to frequent the Belgian Embassy, which was technically located on foreign land, to enjoy alcoholic drinks before going home from work at the Commerce department.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Hoover) (Sept22)

Essential Question #2: Why is the topic significant or important to understanding he Great Depression?

A: I believe that this topic is important to understanding for the Great Depression because of many reasons. One of which is that Hoover was president during the Great Depression. He had promises of poverty being banished from America and then we had the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Hoover held press confences frequently in his first 120 days of office. As soon as the Stock Market Crash, he reduced his availability, thus causing less and less press conferences. Hoover promised "We in America today are nearer to the final triumph over poverty than ever before in the history of any land." and soon after the Stock Market Crash of 1929 occurred, cause our nation to plummet in to what we remember as the Great Depression.
